The Iron Games are a four-part sporting tournament which see construction firms in the UK take part to raise awareness of iron overload, which is common among those of Irish descent. The games raise money for a 3 year Genetic Haemochromatosis Education programme, and have already brought in almost £200,000.
The four games played will be Gaelic football, soccer, hurling and golf. Teams will compete and battle through each game for a total of four Iron Cups to win.
Last year’s inaugural games raised £110,000 for Haemochromatosis UK (HUK), and specifically a three year Genetic Haemochromatosis Education Programme.
Haemochromatosis UK Chairperson, Corrina Towers said, “The four events of The Iron Games saw eleven Irish construction companies, some of them rivals, come together and show a great display of sportsmanship and healthy competitiveness. Without a doubt the inaugural year of The Iron Games has been a huge success and it has turned HUK’s plans for a three year GH Education Programme into a reality.”
Corrina added that, “The GH Education Programme will save lives. HUK will now be able to educate healthcare professionals to better understand GH symptoms and treatment, so they can diagnose earlier and reduce suffering”.
The Iron Games Returns for 2019: Gaelic Football
The Iron Games 2019 kicked off on Saturday 8 June, with Gaelic football.
Despite the winds, all the teams did incredibly well but two teams: Toureen Group and OIiver Connell, made it to the finals. Oliver Connell took home the first of four Iron Trophies!
David Head, Operations Executive at HUK said, “It was so great to see the see the determination and passion of the players. All of the companies taking part are as competitive in the sports field as they are in business, but it was amazing to see all the teams play with a charitable spirit.”
